Best lap times aren't actually the "best" laps; they're the laps with the freshest tires.

So, a car that’s easy to drive fast immediately (shortest learning curve) will put down the fastest time overall. Important to keep in mind any time you’re looking at Lightning Lap or similar results. Randy was very comfortable at speed in the 918.

The P1 was a lot more work. The F70 is also “a wild ride”. Sounds like neither had a linear brake force relationship to the pressure on the pedal.

Was very, very impressed with the braking and handling of the Huayra BC.

Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

I think I experienced the fresh tires thing recently.

When I got new tires for the Vette, they would hook up even in 1st on the street. Then I autocrossed them and they immediately stopped doing that....they are still very good but its like they lost 5% at their limit....

That’s a great video. I have always given Pagani the benefit of the doubt firstly because fiscally I have to, and secondly because it looks like an MF murder weapon in all the best ways. They’re too perfectly extreme not to be good on top of looking like that. Bet they still break a lot and catch on fire.

Sounds about right. Also, my old neighbor is a spitting image of that guy, just about a decade older and 25 lbs heavier. It’s crazy.

Randy NAILS the grip with the tires. With Sport Cup 2 R’s I get 1.5 good laps out of them before they fall 1-2 seconds off the pace and the grip goes to shit. Which is why we switched to Hoosier R7s. There of course is falloff, but it isn’t that bad. And they last more than a track day.

Managing the Sp or t Cup 2R tires in a lap shootout is key. In the morning I get a lap to bring them up to temp, get pressure set right, go back out, don’t heat them. Then run 1-2 hot laps. After that, I will never have as fast as a lap as those the rest of the day.

Has to be more than a bit depressing that you know your best lap of the day will be in the first 10 minutes on track!

Its a little bit freeing though. It really lets me enjoy the rest of the day. I know I’m not going to be setting a PR, so why try? Enjoy the car, enjoy the track. Work on specific corners, work on braking technique and picking up throttle earlier. It really keeps the temptation down of trying to do everything at once and putting together a full lap all day.

Come to think of it. Maybe that is why I have set a new PR every new track day . Have the experience from the practice last time to really go for it for two laps.

Yeah, I could see that. I never look at my times until the end of the day, after I’m done. I try to improve through the day, but I don’t want the clock to convince me to do something stupid to try to shave half a second. I’m still very much an intermediate driver (it’s been way too long since I’ve been on track); I know my car is capable of way more than I’m asking of it, but I also keep in mind that I need to drive it home at the end of the day.

You have more willpower than me! I have the worst of it with Harry’ s Lap Timer running in my peripheral vision. So I can see corner by corner when I do better and worse. I also tend to creep up on improving on times. I’ve only had one off, but many a blown apex. I make sure if I miss, it absolutely cannot be by a lot.

Don’t remind me of time off track. I think I’m back to square 1. 7+ seconds off my PR will be about right. Last track day was September last year. Although kiddo’s daycare is opening up soon, so that should free me up to maybe around September this year.

I need to get one on the schedule this fall just so it forces me to get my car back into track-ready  shape (and finally get a couple recalls done).
